The Power of Music and Scripture

Music is more than just audible sound waves. It has the ability to change human feelings and emotion. Major and Minor keys can make us feel happy, sad, motivated, relaxed, reflective and meditative. Think about some of your favorite songs and how they effect the way you feel.

When music is mixed with scripture it becomes a powerful force that can be life altering. One of my favorite examples of this is found in the Book of Acts.

Acts 16:25-26 NLT

25 Around midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening.

26 Suddenly, there was a massive earthquake, and the prison was shaken to its foundations. All the doors immediately flew open, and the chains of every prisoner fell off!

Paul and Silas were thrown in prison for doing the work of the ministry. They were severely beaten and thrown into the inner cells of the jail. They had every reason to be depressed and feel sorry for themselves. Instead they choose to worship God. They changed the atmosphere in the prison by putting their faith into action. Verse 25 of our text says that the prisoners were listening. I’m sure the other prisoners were wondering what they were doing and why. It’s midnight in the prison and these guys are singing at top of their lungs! Midnight is considered the darkest time of night. It’s a time period right in the middle of the sun going down and the sun coming up. Maybe you are in a dark place in your life or know someone who is. When the Word of God is put to music it has the power to break chains in peoples lives. Our scripture is talking about physical chains but there are spiritual chains and emotional bondage that can fall off as well. It not only will work for you, but for the others that are around you as well. Taste and see that the Lord is good, blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him. Psalm 34:8
